You kick off 2010 with a vocal track on S107, ‘Mindful’. The track has been rocking the ASOT show and is now exclusively available for download on TID. That’s a good start to the year, isn’t it?
Rene: “The beginning of 2010 has been amazingly great for me. Never expected such huge support from Armin on this single – it has now been played 4 times on the show, plus the Ronski Speed remix of it was also voted Future Favourite on last ASOT episode. Armin has featured the tune on 3 of his last ASOT Podcast episodes as well!”

You started producing in 2004 and sent your first demos in early 2006. Only 4 years later, you’ve got a slew of releases out on several big labels. What’s the one thing you’re most proud of to have achieved?
Rene:“’Mindful’ is definitely one of the tracks that I’m most proud of. Not many tunes get played four weeks in row on the ASOT radio show!”

Over the past few years, you’ve been working under several different aliases. Last year, you released two Lens Flare tracks. This year, you kick off with a DNS Project release. Why the shift in aliases?
Rene:“DNS Project has always been my main alias, since the beginning. I produced some slower type of progressive tracks under Lens Flare guise, but found that the melodic uplifting trance is still the main thing for me, so I decided to put main effort on profile of ‘DNS Project’.”

Back to your ‘Mindful’. What do we need to know about this vocal beauty?
Rene:”Mindful is the first vocal trance tune of mine. There are quite many different mixes on this single actually: Main mix is the Whiteglow Vocal mix with a Dub, Ronski Speed Remix and also a Progressive mix by myself. There is also a Radio edit, which is quite different from the original mix – it is oriented for more commercial type of radio stations. The track is out on all download portals.”

Who’s Johanna and how did you end up working with her?
Rene:”Johanna is a Finnish singer who is signed with Cloud 9 Music. I was recommended to work with her by Cloud 9, as she did a really nice job on her previous single with Vast Vision and Jason van Wyk.”

Got more vocal stuff on the menu? Actually, what do you have on the menu for 2010?
Rene:”I have just finished up a new vocal trance track with Lo-Fi Sugar, who is most known probably for the great tune by John O’Callaghan: ‘Never Fade Away’. Have also finished many upcoming remixes and currently I’m working on a remix for really big name in the trance scene, but more info about this one coming soon.”

“The Ocean of White” has toured across 11 European capitals, including Amsterdam, Prague, Madrid, Copenhagen and Dusseldorf, attracting over 250,000 people.

The show boasts a 160 metre stage, covering the length of the football field, and guests will party the night away amongst 48 enormous fountains blasting water against the roof from a raised canal, all to the beats of cutting edge music provided by top international and local DJs.

The heaving dance floor, this year divided by an 80 metre riff, will be surrounded by an extraordinary dance, lights and special effects show, and creatures from the deep all around, plus the traditional secret highlight, to celebrate the New Year in style.

Past July the new show with the theme “Wicked Wonderland” premiered in Amsterdam. Two consecutive nights brought together almost 80,000 ecstatic visitors.

In “Wicked Wonderland” the audience steps through a magical door and will be taken on a sensual journey through a world where fantasy becomes reality and the hidden self will be released.

Sameer caught up with Donna to interview her for Trance Podium.

Miss Marie, it’s great having you with us for the second time this year, this has certainly been a whirlwind of year for you; many Events, many guest mixes and just recently you been asked to apply to be a resident on Sense.fm. How are you doing and how do you manage to survive your hectic schedule?

Hahahah hi ya its great to be here! It’s been slowly but surley picking up which to be honest has been fabulous. I’ve loved it! The more you get out there the more experience you gain and there’s always something to learn! Yes they did approach me which was a fantatsic supprise as I’ve tuned into them myself many times so to be playing for them is a great opportunit! It has been busy along with everything else I have going on. I don’t know hahaha I think it’s the combination of Red Bull I’ve been drinking hahahahah

Sense.fm + you , why don’t you tell us a little more about that?

Well they approached me after watching me for a while (spooky) hahahah and offered me to apply for a residency which I was thrilled about, so of course I said yes! At the minute we are still trying to sort slots out etc., but I can tell you there’s a new name for my show with them which will be exclusive to Sense.FM. I’ve gone with Twisted Shores due to my kind of style having that quite dark element to it, I felt it quite appropriate. So watch this space.

A fact that makes me extremely jealous, you were actually at the “A State Of Trance Episode 400″ that Friday night in the UK this year. How would you describe that night and which sets impressed you the most?

I was indeed! Hahahah. It was brilliant, the atmosphere was amazing and I don’t think they could have fitted anyone else in hahaha! Armin pulled off a good set as always, but for me there was one that every one will know haha: Markus Schulz. The other one that actually impressed me was Ashley Wallbridge. He was in the 2nd room and he was really really good. Loved his style and energy behind the decks. To be honest everyone played really well!

For the readers who are unaware, maybe some info on the radio shows you have worked on and are currently busy with?

I’m actually currently DJing on Djsinthemix.net and Discovertranceradio. Discovertranceradio have been a good move for me they’re a great team to work with and they’re friendly and I’ve been getting some great feedback as well as a high listener rate.

I remember back in February when you did the guest mix for our Facebook group, you mentioned you mixed it on hardware. What are your “personal babies” as you refer to them?

Haha back then I was using numarks what I started out on. How I managed I will never know hahaha. I’ve invested since in some Pioneers CDJ 1000s and omg they are my pride and joy! Love ‘em!

What are your thoughts on the Pioneer CDJ – 2000 Dream Machines?

Well they’re Pioneer and with using the 1000s and 800s a lot out in clubs, I dare say they will speak for themselves.

If there is anyone who would like more info or perhaps book you for a night of melodic insanity, how would they do that?

I actually now have my own website which has been done by a friend and colleague of mine and he’s done a fantatsic job really! Pleased with it (big ups Carl Briggs) hahaha! The website is www.djdonnamarie.co.uk.

Julie Thompson interview

Norwich born and bred Julie already knew she had music running through her veins at a young age. Upon reaching her 14th birthday, young Julie began singing, writing songs and playing the piano, and rapidly taught herself the art of singing and songwriting. To get a better shot at making a living from music, Julie moved to London to follow her dream of being a part of the exciting circus named ‘the music industry’. After meeting up with London producer James Holden, who already had gained substantial fame for his instantly-recognizable ethereal progressive house style, this dream soon became reality. As Holden & Thompson they produced the instant classic ‘Nothing’ in 2003, released on Fatboy Slim’s imprint Loaded/Skint; hard evidence proving the UK had given birth to yet another fantastic top liner. ‘Nothing’ found its way onto an impressive pile of compilations like Global Underground (mixed by Deep Dish), Politics of Dancing (mixed by Paul van Dyk), Gatecrasher Immortal (mixed by Matt Hardwick), Spundae (mixed by Ferry Corsten), A State of Trance and many more. The rest is history. Sameer and Jacquelina caught up with Julie to interview her for Trance Podium. You’ve been featured on Global Underground, Politics of Dancing, Gatecrasher Immortal, Spundae, A State of Trance, Elements of Life, and many more compilations. Which one have you yet to conquer but wish to be featured on? What is your fondest memory touring with any of the previously mentioned one? That’s an easy one.  I want to be on NOW 74 (a pop compilation for kids)!!  It’s so my niece will actually believe that I make music.  I think she thinks I’m lying about it at the minute.  She’s only 8 so then she can show it to her friends! I love touring so I’m lucky enough to have so many brilliant memories but I guess the Tiesto shows will always stick in my mind.  Playing to such huge audiences was an unbelievable experience. You’re noted as the Queen/Princess of Black Hole Recordings. Explain to your new fans how you and Tijs “Tiesto” Verwest crossed paths. What particular incident solidified your choice in maintaining your relationship with him and the label? Am I?!!  I’ve never heard that!  Well Tijs was a fan of ‘Nothing’ (Holden & Thompson) so he asked if I would be up for doing a collaboration with him.  The first track we wrote was ‘Do You Feel Me?’  We went on to write ‘Somewhere Inside’ whilst we were on tour. The Black Hole guys are like one big family and I really like that in a company. They are also straight talkers which is rare in the music industry, so it was an obvious choice for me to continue the relationship with them. Do you prefer using Facebook or MySpace? They are both good I guess but if I wasn’t doing music I don’t think I would use either.  I have a few friends completely obsessed with Facebook and My space.  I think it can be a dangerous thing!! Personally – I actually had the chance to catch you live back in 2007 – South Africa, with Tiesto who came down with Jes and Christian Burns as well. – How was your experience in S.A & what was it like backstage? Cool!  I remember it was a really strange show as it was after the England/SA rugby final.  I know that Christian and I were really relieved when England didn’t win!!  The best thing about it for me though was the sound check.  The fences hadn’t been put up at that stage so loads of kids who would never be able to afford tickets were dancing in the square.  They were having a whale of a time.  It was so cool I filmed them and showed everyone when I got home.  Backstage there were fridges and fridges of Champagne.  I’d never seen that much Champagne before. Julie Thompson – Feeling For Corners, a project with Tiesto`s “Producer of the Year 2008″ – Andy Duguid and yourself – which aspects of him do you think fuse best with your melodic mindset and vocal brilliance? Its not really a project it is most definitely a solo record but I chose Andy to produce it as we had done a few tracks before and I really love his production style.  Andy is a good musician and he understands songs. I didn’t want to change the chords from my original demos.  He felt the same way. I guess we are on the same page taste wise so I think that’s probably why it works so well. We know that on this you especially tried to generate an album that was lyrically honest & song based, written on a piano actually – perhaps some background & listings on your musical and instrument past? Well I trained as a classical pianist when I was young.  I also play guitar but I don’t play it well.  Sometimes I like to write on it though as it makes me concentrate on making the best melody I can.  Sometimes pretty chords can lull you into a false sense of security and make a melody sound better than it actually is.  I always play songs on the guitar afterward to make sure I have done the best job I can. Perhaps a little info on the title of the project? Well I decided to call the album ‘Feeling For Corners’ as when I was writing the album I was totally unsure of where my life was going.  I felt like I was completely blindfolded and all I could do was feel for the next corner to turn to take my life in a new direction.  The reason the cover is a picture of me in a tunnel is that there are no corners. Is there a particular tune on the album that has a certain, definite and personal meaning to you? They all do!  This album is like a diary of my feelings over the past year and a half. A link from the above – perhaps your personal favourite tune that you have lent your vocal talents to? It’s really strange as my favorite song is always the last song I have written.  I guess it’s because it still sounds so fresh.  If I was to pick a favorite though I guess it would be ‘These Shoulders’.  Simply because I love strange melodies and I think it’s the weirdest track I’ve written.  I’m not sure anyone else would agree with me though!  I also love ‘Shine’ which is on the album, but for completely different reasons. Any info you could tease us on with on your other upcoming projects ? I’m always working on loads of different things.  I have a few projects on the go at the moment.  But I guess the next release to look out for is ‘My Number’ which has a featuring by Donna & Anthony.  Donna & Anthony is a fun pop project I’m part of.

The world’s biggest SENSATION has received another accolade for Best Sound & Production at The Australian Festival Awards, held in Sydney last week.

Having recently been voted Victoria’s No. 1 event/festival at the Sony “In The Mix” Awards, Australians have embraced SENSATION as the New Year’s Eve destination, after 40,000 people attended the event’s Australian debut at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium last year.

Throughout the month of September, close to 250 festivals were nominated in the Festival Awards. Over 23,000 public votes from around Australia were tallied to decide the 11 category winners.

The award comes hot on the heels of SENSATION announcing its supurb line-up for December 31, 2009, when the event returns to Etihad Stadium with a brand new show, “The Ocean of White”.
